How to Make a Saline Solution

Saline solution can be used to clean contact lenses, clear out your nasal passage, or even clean a wound. This is a convenient liquid to have around. Saline solution is easy to make, not to mention inexpensive. Read on to learn how to make a saline solution.

  1. Pour the eight ounces of distilled water into the pot. Place it on the stove and set it to medium heat. Let it sit on the heat until it almost reaches boiling point. Once you see bubbles form at the bottom, you can take it off the heat.

  2. Add the salt and baking soda and stir until completely dissolved. It should only take a minute to complete. The end product will have a cloudy color.

  3. Take the funnel and slowly pour the saline solution into the storage container. Let the solution cool down to room temperature before using it. It is best when used within six months of making it. Store at room temperature.

  4. Warnings

    If using this as contact lens cleaner, it is important to make sure everything is completely sterile. A non-sterile product could cause blindness.
