Many people have to take medications on a regular basis. Some people have to be on certain medications for long periods of time, while others just a short period. Most medications do have side effects, especially if taken for long periods of time. One medication that can be a common long-term medication is Naproxen DR, which is an anti-inflammatory medication. Although it has a lot of benefits, it can have some repercussions if taken over the long term.

What is Naproxen DR?

Naproxen DR helps to reduce inflammation and swelling by curbing certain hormones in the body that cause them. It is also commonly known as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), which can be prescribed on a long-term basis to certain patients and can be prescribed for many different reasons and medical conditions.

Benefits

Naproxen DR is commonly prescribed for such medical conditions as dental problems, arthritis, tendonitis and muscular inflammation. It can be used for headaches, back pain and swelling of extremities for different reasons. It also helps relieve the pain that is associated with swelling and inflammation and also is known to help reduce fevers similar to what Advil or Motrin would do.

Time Frame

Naproxen DR is normally prescribed for short periods of time, although for some people with certain long-term medical problems, it may be prescribed for longer periods while under medical supervision. Doctors do not prefer to keep patients on Naproxen DR for long periods of time because it is a medication that, if taken for long periods of time, can have severe medical ramifications. Arthritis is one condition that may require longer therapy sessions on Naproxen DR.

Side Effects

Naproxen DR has some serious possible side effects, primarily when taken over long periods of time. It is a medication that is hard on the liver, the stomach and the kidneys. As Naproxen DR is processed in the liver, it can cause hepatitis, which is the liver shutting down, if taken for long periods of time. It is hard on the heart and can increase the chance of strokes, heart attacks and blood clots. It can also cause stomach bleeding, ulcers and other gastrointestinal problems. There is also a chance of anaphylactic reactions to this medication as well, as with most medications.

Considerations

When taking Naproxen DR, you should follow all the physician's instructions. To help reduce the risk of overdose, take the prescription as directed. Make sure you tell your physician about all the medications you are currently taken to make sure there won't be any interactions between them. Do not crush or chew the pills, but make sure to swallow the pills whole. You should always take Naproxen DR with food because it is hard on the stomach. Do not take more than the prescribed dose, even if it doesn't feel like it is enough. Talk to your doctor about all changes in your medical condition while on the medication.
