Diet for Lymphocytic Colitis

Lymphocytic colitis describes the inflammation of the colon, characterized by an increased number of white blood cells, lymphocytes, in the lining of the colon. Symptoms may include watery diarrhea, bloating, and nausea. Medication can help alleviate these symptoms, but proper diet is also necessary to control this condition.

Foods to Avoid

Certain foods exacerbate the symptoms of lymphocytic colitis and should be avoided. Fatty foods place a greater burden on your digestive tract and your immune system. Caffeine can worsen nausea and gas, so avoid coffee and soda. Dairy products also can cause bloating and gas, so look out for foods such as milk, yogurt, and cheese. Spicy foods, as we all know, can wreak havoc on the excretory system. Even some vegetables, such as beans, cabbage, and broccoli, can worsen the symptoms of lymphocytic colitis.

Foods to Seek Out

In general, a heart-healthy diet is a colon-healthy diet. Look for foods that are low in fat and sodium. Whole grain products are great, as well as foods rich in fiber. Most fruits and vegetables are safe as well. Crafting a diet that will not inflame your bowels is crucial for preventing and alleviating the symptoms of lymphocytic colitis.
