What Is Ciprofloxacin Hcl 500 Used for?

By Hillary Cirillo ; Updated July 27, 2017

Belonging to a group of medications known as quinolone antibiotics, Ciprofloxin Hcl 500 works by halting bacteria growth. As a result, it works only on bacterial infections and will not work on viral infections.

Cirpofloxin Hcl 500 is primarily used to treat kidney infections and infections of the bladder or urinary tract. It is also prescribed for other bacterial infections, such as ear infections.

Ciprofloxin Hcl 500 can be taken with or without food, often only once per day. As it inhibits the growth of bacteria causing the infection, the treatment often begins to work shortly after the first dose.

Side Effects

Some of the common minor side effects of taking Cirpofloxin Hcl 500 include nausea, mild dizziness, or trouble sleeping. Though occurrence is rare, this medication can also cause tendon damage, especially to those over the age of 60.

Some foods and other medication contain ingredients, such as magnesium, which can bind to the Ciprofloxin Hcl 500 and prevent the drug's full absorption. A pharmacist or medical professional can provide a list of items to avoid while taking Cirpofloxin Hcl 500.

Overuse of Cirpofloxin Hcl 500 can lead to its effectiveness decreasing over time.
