Super Citrimax Ingredients

By Allen Bethea ; Updated July 18, 2017

The fruit of the Garcinia cambogia plant contains an ingredient that may discourage humans and other animals from eating it. Garcinia cambogia fruit has hydroxycitric acid -- the active ingredient in the nonprescription diet aid Super CitriMax. Talk with your physician before you take any Super CitriMax dietary supplement for weight loss.

The principle ingredient in Super CitriMax is an extract from the plant Garcinia cambogia. This extract contains about 50 percent hydroxycitric acid, or HCA. It is Super CitriMax's HCA content that may help you lose weight. A study published in the journal "Mutation Research” in 2005 found that Super CitriMax reduced appetite, reduced weight, increased fat burning and lowered blood lipids.

Another study done in 2010 and published in the "Journal of Obesity" examined the methodology of 12 previous studies on the effectiveness of HCA supplementation for weight loss. The reviewers looked at the results of these studies involving 706 subjects and concluded that HCA was more effective than placebo in facilitating weight loss.

Super CitriMax Ingredients

Super CitriMax by Natrol Incorporated lists three different ingredients on its label: 500 milligrams of Garcinia cambogia extract, 50 milligrams of calcium and 300 milligrams of HCA. The HCA listed is not added to the product, but merely reflects the amount of HCA contained in the Garcinia cambogia extract. Likewise, calcium is not added as a dietary supplement, but is instead a byproduct of the chemical processes used to extract HCA from Garcinia cambogia fruit.

Inactive Ingredients

The powder that makes up Natrol Super CitriMax capsules contains not only Garcinia cambogia extract, but some other ingredients with no nutritional or medicinal value. These inactive ingredients are added by the manufacturer to make it easier for their machines to fill the gelatin capsules, add bulk to the capsule contents, bind the capsule contents together and ensure that once swallowed, the capsule contents quickly disperse in the stomach. The Natrol Super CitriMax label lists just three inactive ingredients: gelatin, water and magnesium stearate.

Super CitriMax Safety

A 2005 study published in "Food and Chemical Toxicology" found HCA to be safe in doses up to 2,800 milligrams per day. In 2009, however, the manufacturer of Hydroxycut -- a diet aid also containing HCA -- voluntarily recalled their product after the Food and Drug Administration raised concerns about the link between HCA and liver damage. Although Hydroxycut contained several ingredients besides HCA, it was temporarily taken from the market and reformulated. Hydroxycut no longer contains any HCA or Garcinia cambogia extract.
