Food and Natural Kidney Pain Relief

Your kidneys help filter waste from your body and remove water from your blood. The substances filtered from your blood become urine, which is stored in your bladder and eventually voided. The National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse states that your kidneys process about 200 quarts of blood per day. Some natural foods may be helpful in treating pain and other symptoms associated with kidney problems. However, discuss this treatment approach with your doctor first.

Kidney Problems

Several kidney-related health problems may cause pain, notes the National Kidney Foundation. These include kidney stones and urinary tract infections. Kidney stones may stem from numerous factors, including bowel disease, renal tubular defects, complications associated with surgery for obesity and an inherited condition in which your body absorbs excess calcium from food. Urinary tract infections result from bacterial invasion of your urethra or bladder. Infections in these urinary tract structures may migrate up your ureters to your kidneys, causing pain and other problems.

Helpful Natural Foods

Several natural foods may be helpful in relieving yur kidney pain or treating kidney problems. According to certified nutritional consultant Phyllis A. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," consider consuming the juice of half a fresh lemon in 8 oz. of water every 30 minutes to help treat kidney-stone-related pain. Other beneficial foods in treating your kidney stones may include vitamin A-rich foods such as apricots, alfalfa, carrots, cantaloupes, pumpkin, sweet potatoes and squash. Helpful foods in treating urinary tract infections may include watermelon, parsley and celery, notes Balch.

Oat bran may be one of the most helpful foods in treating kidney pain, especially when caused by kidney stones. Medical doctor Alan R. Gaby, author of "The Natural Pharmacy," states that oat bran is a rich source of insoluble fiber, which helps decrease your body's calcium absorption and your level of urinary calcium, which in turn reduces your risk for kidney stone formation. Gaby notes that you should always check with your doctor before using oat bran and other sources of insoluble fiber for this health purpose. Some individuals may not absorb enough calcium, and consuming increased amounts of oat bran may further deprive them of this nutrient.


A kidney problem involving pain may be an indication of a serious, underlying health problem that requires the care of a licensed health-care provider. Kidney infections, in particular, are cause for concern, as they may lead to serious health complications. Do not delay seeking treatment if you develop flank, or side, pain or other symptoms commonly associated with kidney problems. Use diet and nutrition as adjunct therapy for this condition, and only under the supervision of a physician.
