Things That Will Make You Feel Skinny

By Michelle Powell-Smith ; Updated July 18, 2017

The only way to lose weight and keep it off involves willpower, diet and exercise, but a few simple changes can help you to feel better about your body. It is easier to make good choices when you feel good about yourself, whether you have a lot of weight to lose or you're just feeling bloated.

Eat Right

Eating a healthful diet, including lots of fruits and vegetables, can help you to feel skinny and maybe even to become thinner along the way. Heavy meals or fried foods may leave you ready to loosen your pants, while light, healthful meals keep your energy level up and your pants buttoned. A high-fiber diet will reduce the abdominal pressure that comes with constipation, helping you to feel skinnier regardless of the number on the scale. With fiber, drink plenty of water to reduce water retention, as bloating can make you feel heavier than you really are.

Regular exercise has many benefits other than weight loss and physical health. Increased muscle tone will help your clothing to fit better so you'll feel skinnier regardless of your weight. Improvements in overall strength will give you a mental boost to keep going through your day. Exercise reduces depression and anxiety and can help you overcome negative thoughts, so you can feel skinny instead of worrying about your weight.

Standing up straight can change your entire appearance. You'll look thinner, more alert and energetic immediately. If you struggle with good posture, consider Pilates exercises to help tone your core muscles. Sit and stand with your chest high, your tummy tucked in and your shoulders back and dropped. You'll be amazed how much skinnier you look in seconds. As an added benefit, your back will feel better.

Wear clothes that fit your body and flatter your frame, regardless of your weight. Squeezing yourself into clothing that is too small will make you look and feel fat, not skinny. Look for garments that emphasize your best features and make you feel good about yourself so you’ll feel more attractive at any weight. If you are dieting, buy a few items of clothing to celebrate your thinner self. Have larger clothes altered to fit as you gradually lose so you can see that you're getting skinnier when you look in the mirror. Make sure your undergarments fit well to create a smooth and toned appearance. You might find that shapewear helps you feel skinnier, too.
