How Many Grams of Protein Should a 50-Year-Old Woman Eat Per Day?

By Dakota Karratti

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, a 50-year-old woman should eat 46 grams of protein each day. You need protein in order to repair and maintain the cells in your body. Every single cell in your body contains protein. When you eat protein, your body breaks it down into amino acids, which are necessary for life.

Protein Foods

In America, the most commonly commonly consumed protein rich foods are meat, poultry and eggs, according to the USDA. However, these protein sources contain unhealthy fats, called solid fats, so you should choose lean varieties such as lean ground beef. Lean protein sources contain less unhealthy fat than their fatty counterparts. Other sources of protein include seafood, nuts and seeds. The fats in these protein sources, called oils, are healthier. The USDA suggests getting your protein from a variety of sources to maximize the nutritional benefits of your food.
