Side Effects of the M5 Supplement

By Brian Willett

M5 is a supplement manufactured by the sports nutrition company Cellucor, which makes a number of premium-priced workout products. M5, also known as M5 Extreme, is intended to be used prior to workouts to enhance your intensity and increase your energy levels. While some ingredients in M5 may support these uses, the supplement may also trigger unpleasant side effects. Consult a doctor before using M5 to ensure its use is safe for you.

Nausea and Diarrhea

B-12, one of the primary ingredients in M5, is nearly six times the daily suggested intake. The B-vitamins are often included in energy supplements because they help your body metabolize foods, though they aren't stimulants like caffeine. Unfortunately, large doses as in M5 can cause side effects such as nausea and diarrhea.

Dehydration Risk

While intense exercise alone can promote an increased risk of dehydration due to increased sweating, some ingredients in M5 may increase this risk significantly. Two of the ingredients included in M5 are creatine and caffeine, a combination that the University of Maryland Medical Center explains can increase your risk of dehydration.

Dizziness and Lack of Coordination

Although M5 is intended to increase your focus and athletic ability, ingredients in the product may be detrimental to both pursuits. Dehydration may cause dizziness and impaired coordination, and these effects are also associated with high intakes of vitamin B-12. Caffeine alone may also cause dizziness, according to Drugs.com.

Increased Cholesterol Levels

Although M5 does not contain any saturated fat or cholesterol, common causes of increased cholesterol levels, M5 does contain betaine. Betaine is a nutrient that facilitates chemical reactions and aids in the production of carnitine, which helps your body produce energy. Unfortunately, betaine may also cause increased cholesterol levels, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Anxiety and Nervousness

Using M5 may cause anxiety and nervousness, especially when taken with other caffeinated products, as caffeine can cause these effects in high doses. In addition, large doses of vitamin B-12 can cause nervousness and anxiety, so the combination of the ingredients in M5 may promote a more significant risk than either ingredient would normally pose.
