Recommended Dosage of Ribose

By Beth Richards

The recommended dosage of d-ribose, or ribose, depends on your doctor's suggested amount for you personally and the manufacturer's indication. The average serving size of ribose is 5 g, but varies depending on the company. Check with your health care practitioner if you have any questions about your own dose of ribose.

What is Ribose?

If you've heard of DNA, you've heard of ribose. Deoxyribose nucleic acid, or DNA, contains DNA and RNA, the building blocks of your genetic codes. Ribose is a monosacchardharide, a reducing sugar, and is found in every cell in your body. Besides carrying genetic information, ribose is important in the production of ATP, which stores energy in your body and gives you energy.

Ribose as a Supplement

Ribose is usually taken in powder form as an alternative or complementary treatment for body building and energy, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, heart and circulation problems and other conditions. The powder is mixed in juice, water or sprinkled on cold food, never heated food. A 2006 study of d-ribose in "The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine" noted significant improvement for fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue symptoms. Participants took 5 g of d-ribose three times a day. Ribose is also a common ingredient in energy drinks.

Bodybuilding and Exercise

Your doctor and trainer should design a program of supplements for bodybuilding or personal training based on your individual needs, health and size. The website Muscle-Building.com suggests a loading phase of ribose at 3 g taken three to four times a day, then a maintenance dose of 6 to 9 g daily.

Additional Considerations

Dr. Andrew Weil, M.D., noted complementary health educator, explains on his website that ribose is important but it has no caloric value. Dr. Weil also notes that ribose is usually safe, but suggests limiting your intake to 15 g a day.
