Combining honey and lemon may not detox your body, but there are some benefits to this tart and sweet combination. The combination of lemon and honey in water is a rich source of antioxidants, may help boost energy and makes a soothing drink. Consult your doctor about the benefits of drinking a lemon and honey mixture.

Antioxidant Power

Both lemon and honey supply your body with antioxidants. These compounds may help prevent or delay the onset of various illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease by protecting your cells from oxidative damage by free radicals. Antioxidants found in lemon and honey water include vitamin C, polyphenols and a trace amount of selenium.

Energy Booster

Lemon and honey in water may serve as an energy booster. All the calories in honey come from carbs, which are your body's preferred source of energy. According to a 2008 review article published in the American Journal of College Nutrition, honey works as well as a glucose gel supplement in boosting energy levels for athletes. Plus, the drink also contributes to your daily water intake, improving hydration, which may also benefit your energy level.

Soothing Drink for Cough

If you have a cough, drinking lemon and honey in water may help. A 2014 article published in Canadian Family Physician reports that a dose of honey may help reduce mucous secretion and aid in cough control. Also, as a rich source of vitamin C, lemon may help boost immune health and help your body's fight against various bacteria and viruses that cause you to cough.

Things to Consider

While lemon and honey in water offers a number of health benefits, it's important to note that despite what you may read on the Internet, the drink cannot detox or cleanse your body. There's no evidence that any drink improves your body's ability to rid itself of harmful chemicals, according to the KidsHealth website.

Also, honey is a source of calories, with 64 calories per tablespoon, and all its calories come from sugar. When it comes to weight control, it's important to count all sources of calories, even those that come from a drink you might be taking as a health booster.
