Strattera & Weight Loss in Adults

By Elizabeth Wolfenden ; Updated July 18, 2017

Strattera is a medication that affects the nerves and brain chemicals that are associated with hyperactivity and impulse control. It is approved to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, in children and adults. Unlike other ADHD medications, Strattera is not a stimulant and does not usually produce weight loss in adults. If you have specific questions or concerns about your weight loss or the way Strattera is affecting you, contact your doctor.

ADHD Medications

Stimulant medications are commonly used to treat ADHD in both children and adults. One of the most common side effects of these stimulant medications is weight loss. Because of this, some doctors may prescribe these medications as a weight loss aid even when the patient does not have ADHD, in a practice known as off-label prescribing. Since Strattera is not a stimulant medication, it does not produce the same side effects as do other ADHD medications and is not prescribed as a weight loss aid.

Strattera Side Effects

In clinical trials, the most common side effects of Strattera in adults were constipation, nausea, dry mouth, fatigue, insomnia, erectile dysfunction, hot flush, problems with urination and pain during menstruation. A loss of appetite also occurred for some individuals, but did not produce weight loss. Although rare, serious side effects may also occur. These include feeling faint, shortness of breath, chest pain, fast or uneven heartbeats, pain in the upper stomach, itching, dark urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, numbness, a tingly sensation, burning pain, clay-colored stools or an increase in blood pressure. In addition, Strattera may also cause unusual thoughts or behavior, hallucinations, aggression and may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts in children, adolescents or young adults. If any of these serious side effects occur, call 911 or seek immediate medical attention.

Due to differences in biological factors, medications affect everyone in a slightly different way. Although weight loss is not a typical side effect of Strattera, this does not mean that this side effect never occurs. You may find yourself losing weight after beginning this medication, especially if the medication causes nausea or a loss of appetite that makes you eat less than you normally would. If you do experience weight loss while using this medication and are concerned, contact your doctor.

Weight Loss

Strattera is not likely to be effective as a weight loss aid, but many other things may help you lose weight. You will lose weight whenever you consume fewer calories than you burn. You can create this calorie deficit by decreasing the amount of calories you consume by dieting or increasing the amount of calories you burn through exercising. If diet or exercise is not possible for you for some reason, prescription weight loss medications or other medical interventions may also prove useful. Always work with your doctor to determine the best weight loss plan for you.
