The Benefits of GoChi Juice

By Danielle Hall

GoChi juice, also known as Himalayan goji, is a type of berry that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine. Scientific studies show support for the use of GoChi juice for a number of health-related issues. However, consult your doctor before trying to prevent, treat or cure any condition with GoChi juice.

GoChi juice may help protect the body from disease in a general manner. GoChi was found to raise antioxidant levels in a group of 50 healthy Chinese adults aged 55 to 72 in a study published in January 2009 in “Nutrition Research.” Antioxidants fight free radicals, which are compounds that cause cellular damage and thus are involved in the pathology of numerous diseases. The researchers mention that supplementation with GoChi beyond 30 days may have an impact on free radical-related disease.

GoChi may help preserve ocular function. Scientific evidence shows that GoChi can protect cells involved in the pathology of glaucoma. A study published in 2008 in “Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology” found that GoChi protected neurons from toxicity caused by β-amyloid peptide, a type of plaque that accumulates in the brain and is also linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

Prostate Cancer

Drinking GoChi juice may help protect men from prostate cancer. Some scientific evidence shows that GoChi can induce apoptosis, or cell death. GoChi was found to lead to apoptosis of prostate cancer cells and reduce tumor weights in a rat model in a study published in September 2009 in the “Journal of Medicinal Food.”

Immune Function

GoChi juice may help boost immune function. A study published in October 2009 in the “Journal of Medicinal Food” found that supplementation with 100 ml of GoChi juice for 30 days led to improved immunicological function in a group consisting of 60 healthy older adults. Specifically, it increased lymphocyte count, which is a type of white blood cell responsible for protecting the body from harmful invaders such as viruses and tumors. The participants also noticed an improved feeling of well-being from the GoChi supplementation.
