Side Effects of Andrographis Complex

By Carole Anne Tomlinson

Andrographis Complex is the brand name in the United States for an herbal supplement that contains andrographis, echinacea, calcium and other ingredients. MediHerb, the manufacturer of Andrographis Complex, claims the supplement will help make your immune system function better, as well as help you cope with stress. Because Andrographis Complex does not classify as an actual medicine, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved it for medical use. The ingredients in Andrographis Complex may induce side effects.

Andrographis

The plant andrographis may help fight off infections. Drugs.com states researchers study this plant to determine if it may help treat cancer. The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center indicates that the use of andrographis in supplement form may produce a variety of common and non-serious side effects. You may, for example, develop gastric problems such as diarrhea with cramps, as well as nausea when you first use the supplement. Drugs.com states that in a clinical trial with patients suffering from human immondeficiency viral infections, the supplement produced a decrease in many patients’ interest in sex. Andrographis also may produce a feeling of tiredness or fatigue, as well as headaches.

Echinacea

Echinacea, also known as purple coneflower, is derived from a flowering plant. People commonly use echinacea as a supplement to ward off colds and flu. When you start using Andrographis Complex, the echinacea contained within it may cause you to experience an imbalance in your intestines that can induce constipation. The substance also may produce pain in your gastric system, primarily in the top portion of your abdominal region, the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center reports. Echinacea also may induce temporary dizziness as well as headaches.

Calcium

Andrographis Complex, the company states, contains 40 mg of calcium per pill. While you need this mineral in your body to help it function properly, taking it as a supplement can induce some side effects, including some categorized as serious, MayoClinic.com reports. Calcium may produce sensations of tingling throughout your body. It may cause unusual sweating and your body may flush, meaning your skin grows warm and red. Calcium also can produce queasiness and vomiting and dizziness. The mineral also may make your heart beat irregularly, a condition known as arrhythmia. All these side effects need medical attention from your doctor, especially an arrhythmia, because it can cause heart attacks.

Holy Basil

Ocimum sanctum, more commonly called holy basil, may help several medical conditions such as constipation and epilepsy. Andrographis Complex contains 100 mg of the holy basil leaf extract as well as 10 mg of the essential oil from the plant. Studies have not yet shown it to produce significant side effects. However, holy basil contains the substance estragole, which may have carcinogenic effects.
