Dairy Queen Nutrition Guide

By Steven Lalevich

Dairy Queen offers an extensive menu that includes hot meal items as well as dessert treats. As with most restaurants, many options at Dairy Queen are high in calories and fat, and the numbers quickly add up if you have both a meal and dessert together. Some options are better than others at Dairy Queen, but the most important part of having a reasonable meal is exercising portion control.

The nutritional profile of Dairy Queen’s burgers varies considerably based on the size of the burger. An Original Hamburger has just 350 calories, 14 g total fat, 7 g saturated fat and 680 mg sodium. A half-pound FlameThrower GrillBurger, on the other hand, packs in 1010 calories, 70 g total fat, 25 g saturated fat and 1540 mg sodium. That’s about a full day’s worth of fat and more than a day’s worth of saturated fat. Excessive intake of saturated fat may contribute to high cholesterol. A more moderate choice is the quarter-pound GrillBurger, which has 490 calories, 24 g total fat, 8 g saturated fat and 690 mg sodium.

More Eats

In addition to burgers, Dairy Queen offers many other meal choices. The Grilled Chicken Wrap provides just 200 calories, 13 g total fat, 3.5 g saturated fat and 450 mg sodium. A heavier chicken sandwich option is the Crispy FlameThrower Chicken Sandwich, which provides 890 calories, 55 g total fat, 11 g saturated fat and 1850 mg sodium. If you’re not in the mood for a sandwich, the Chicken Strip Basket may tempt you. However, a 6-piece order with fries and toast boasts 1410 calories, 59 g total fat, 9 g saturated fat and 3760 mg sodium. That’s about two day’s worth of sodium, and excessive sodium intake may lead to high blood pressure, or hypertension.

In addition to the size, the flavor of your Blizzard also has a large impact on its nutritional profile. The lowest calorie option is the small Banana Split Blizzard, which provides 440 calories, 13 g total fat, 9 g saturated fat and 58 g sugar. A small Midnight Truffle Blizzard, on the other hand, provides 770 calories, 38 g total fat, 21 g saturated fat and 79 g sugar. A large Banana Split Blizzard has only 10 more calories than the small Midnight Truffle Blizzard. The highest calorie option is the large Oreo Cookie Jar Blizzard, which weighs in at 1550 calories, 60 g total fat, 31 g saturated fat and 160 g sugar.

More Treats

Other treats at Dairy Queen include the Peanut Buster Parfait, which provides 700 calories, 30 g total fat, 16 g saturated fat and 72 g sugar. A small cone is a lower calorie option, providing 230 calories in the vanilla flavor and 240 calories in the chocolate flavor. Dilly Bars are another lower calorie treat. A chocolate Dilly Bar provides 240 calories, 15 g fat, 9 g saturated fat and 20 g sugar. For a fat-free treat, try a StarKiss Bar, which provides only 80 calories, 0 g fat and 17 g sugar.
