SottoPelle & Weight Loss

By Jenna Morris ; Updated July 18, 2017

SottoPelle is a form of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy used for both men and women. The product comes in the form of pellets, no larger than a grain of rice, and they are implanted under your skin. The pellets last four to six months and work on restoring your body to the physiological state it once had in your 40s. The manufacturer claims the pellets are good for preventing bone and muscle loss, yet it does not specifically state weight loss as a benefit. Speak to your physician to determine if SottoPelle is right for you, especially if weight loss is your goal.

This particular hormone replacement therapy came to the United States in 1939 as a way to alleviate menopausal symptoms in women. SottoPelle claims that research now finds pellet therapy the most accepted and effective solution for treating menopause and andropause (male menopause) symptoms, though it does not support this statement.

Menopause, and even andropause, are responsible for a variety of symptoms including mood swings, decreased sex drive and weight gain. Your hormones have a direct impact on your metabolism, appetite and fat storage. With the shift in hormones during menopause, your weight may be affected. Even if you exercise and eat the same as you used to, some sort of weight gain could be inevitable.

Losing weight during menopause could occur by taking SottoPelle due to the pellets restructuring your hormones and providing more testosterone, the hormone responsible for turning your caloric intake into lean muscle mass. However, MayoClinic.com reports that bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, or BHRT, isn't any better than standard hormone therapy. In fact, the FDA states that "[it is] not aware of any credible scientific evidence to support claims made regarding the safety and effectiveness of compounded 'BHRT' drugs."

Side Effects

Taking SottoPelle, depending on male or female, could cause breast tenderness, acne, hair loss, facial hair growth, decreased sperm count, decreased testicular mass and prostate enlargement. However, SottoPelle reports patients as having increased energy and sex drive, consistent moods, anxiety relief, decreased body fat and a greater capacity for getting their bodies in shape.

SottoPelle may be a more attractive option if you are approaching the idea of hormone replacement with more goals than just weight loss. As with anything not backed by strong scientific evidence, speak to your doctor first before you initiate any treatment. Aging and menopause are natural parts of life, and there are other options for coping with symptoms that your doctor may help you discover.
