Is Trix Yogurt Good for You?

By Natalie Stein

If you are looking for a healthy food for your children, you might want to consider Trix Yogurt from Yoplait. Each container of Trix Yogurt is 4 oz., or 113 g, and has two flavors. The pairs are Very Berry Watermelon with Berry Bolt, Cotton Candy with Strawberry Kiwi, Raspberry Rainbow with Strawberry Banana Bash, Triple Cherry with Wild Berry Blue and Watermelon Burst with Strawberry Punch.

With 90 calories and 6 g protein per serving, Trix Yogurt can be a light snack or part of a meal. Whether or not you decide that Trix Yogurt is healthful, remember that what you eat with it is just as important. Eating the yogurt for breakfast with a piece of fruit and some whole grain cereal is lower in calories, fat and sodium than if your breakfast consists of yogurt along with bacon and fried eggs.

Bone Health

Calcium is an essential mineral for building and maintaining strong bones and teeth, but the 2005 Dietary Guidelines from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services state that many children and adults are not meeting their needs for calcium. Vitamin D is also important for bone health because it helps your body absorb and use calcium from food. Trix Yogurt is a natural source of calcium, and it is fortified with vitamin D. Each serving provides 10 percent of the daily value for these nutrients.

Lactose Intolerance

Lactose intolerance occurs in people who are not able to properly digest lactose, a sugar that is naturally in milk and many dairy products. If you are lactose intolerant, you may experience cramping or diarrhea a few hours after you eat milk products, but chances are that you can tolerate small amounts of lactose. Trix Yogurt may be suitable for most people with lactose intolerance because of the low lactose content as well as live and active cultures, but talk to your doctor if you have the condition.

According to the Mayo Clinic, probiotics are live and active bacteria that are not essential in your diet. These healthy bacteria may protect your body against harmful microorganisms, especially if you have gone through treatment with antibiotics. You can get probiotics from miso, fermented milk and some yogurts, and they may help prevent diarrhea or lower your chances of catching a cold. Trix Yogurt contains the common probiotic cultures Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus.

Trix Yogurt has 14 g sugars, which are simple carbohydrates that provide 4 calories per g. Added sugars are called empty calories because they increase the calories in food without increasing the nutrient content. However, the 2005 Dietary Guidelines from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services state that small amounts of added sugar can be beneficial if they encourage children to consume healthy foods. In the case of Trix Yogurt, the sugars give a sweet flavor that makes children more likely to consume the nutrient-dense yogurt, which provides a half-serving of dairy per container.
