Chai Tea and Weight Loss

By Nina K.

Made with tea, milk, sugar and an assortment of spices, chai tea is a relatively high-calorie beverage -- so it's typically a poor choice when you're watching your waistline. And while the tea itself may provide a slight weight-loss boost, the effect has yet to be confirmed by major studies, according to the Linus Pauling Institute.

The Calorie Factor

You only lose weight by burning more calories for energy than you consume through food and beverages. While plain brewed tea contains zero calories, chai is usually served latte-style, greatly increasing the calorie load. For example, one recipe for homemade chai from "Epicurious" contains 126 calories per serving, while one commercial variety of chai latte mix contains 120 calories per serving. If you skip the additives and brew a chai-spiced teabag, however, you can enjoy similar flavors without any calories.
