Taurine and Weight Loss

By Jenni Wiltz ; Updated July 18, 2017

Supplements and energy drinks can contain a dizzying array of ingredients, which can make it hard to determine what each of them do. One substance that can be found in both is taurine, an amino acid. Most of the research on taurine has been on its benefits for athletic performance, which can help you lose weight. In addition, taurine has also helped control weight in some animal modes, but more research is needed.

Taurine in the Body

Taurine is one of the most common amino acids in the body and is especially prevalent in muscle fibers. Increased taurne intake may help increase muscle mass and athletic performance. (Reference 1). Taurine can also help control the levels of electrolytes in the blood and plays a role in neurological development and electrolyte levels. (Reference 1)

Taurine Effects on Weight Loss

By improving muscle strength and performance, taurine may help you get more out of your workouts. (Reference 1). When combined with a regular exercise routine, this could help with weight loss. In addition, a study published in a 2000 issue of "The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" found that when taurine was fed to animals in a rat model of diabetes, the animals lost weight, suggesting that taurine may have other benefits for weight loss.
