The Best Ways to Make Homemade Body Wraps

By Christine Switzer ; Updated July 18, 2017

Even though a body wrap may seem like a complicated beauty treatment to try at home, you may be able to enjoy homemade versions with a little time and effort. You may need assistance with the actual wrapping, which should be snug but not too tight and should overlap so that each part of your body is covered twice. If you have any known allergies or current medical conditions, consult your primary care provider before trying an at-home body wrap to avoid any medical complications or other adverse effects.

Herbal Body Wrap

Create an herbal body wrap to help promote energy and revitalization or improve relaxation and rest. Greta Breedlove in “The Herbal Home Spa: Naturally Refreshing Wraps, Rubs, Lotions, Masks, Oils, and Scrubs” recommends using peppermint, rosemary, juniper and lemon peel for energy or lavender, chamomile, clary sage and tangerine peel for relaxation.

Blend 2 cups of fresh or 1 cup dried herbs in a large pot, cover with boiling water, and steep with a lid on for 5 minutes. Strain out the herbs, and add 2-inch wide cotton strips to the pot. Cover and steep them for five minutes. Wring out excess liquid before wrapping your body. Once all the strips are in place, relax under a tarp and a few blankets for 10 minutes. After unwrapping the strips, wait to shower for 4 to 24 hours.

Detox Body Wrap

Make a detox body wrap for purification and rejuvenation with a blend of mineral clay and olive oil. Chris Leung in “Complete Body Detox Guide to Better Health” recommends using thermal blankets with this body wrap to help eliminate toxins and enhance the experience. To prepare, boil 2 cups of water and then dissolve ¼ cup of sea salt into the boiling water. Mix in 1 cup mineral clay and 2 tbsp. olive oil until blended and continue to stir vigorously until the mixture forms a paste.

Cover your body with the paste and wrap yourself loosely in a sheet or thin towels. Add thermal blankets if possible and wait for 10 minutes. Then, soak your entire body in a warm bath for 45 to 60 minutes before rinsing clean. Leung advises staying hydrated both before and during the wrap.

Cellulite Body Wrap

Minimize the appearance of cellulite through a cellulite body wrap using essential oils. Breedlove recommends this body wrap noting that you may need assistance with applying the cellophane. To prepare, choose a warmer room in your home and increase the heat.

Combine 8 drops of grapefruit essential oils with 2 drops each of thyme, fennel, lavender, geranium and juniper berry essential oils. Add 2 cups of almond oil, mix well, and then pour the mixture into a plastic squirt bottle.

Take time to exfoliate your skin with a silk mitt, loofah or dry brush, then massage the oil mixture into your arms, legs and torso. Add the cellophane wrap snugly but not too tightly. Relax for 20 minutes in the warm room, remove the cellophane, and in the shower rinse clean with a warm water and then with cool water.
