Nutritional Facts About Sorghum Syrup

Sorghum syrup, also called sweet sorghum, is made from juice extracted from sorghum cane plants, which are grown in the Southeastern United States. This sweet syrup can be used on pancakes, biscuits or as a topping for ice cream. It is sometimes used in baked goods as a substitute for molasses, corn syrup, maple syrup or honey. Like other natural sweeteners, sorghum syrup contains sugar and will affect blood sugar.

Nutrient Breakdown

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, 1 tablespoon of sorghum syrup contains 61 calories. There is no protein, fiber or fat in sorghum syrup. Each tablespoon contains 15.73 grams of carbohydrate from sugar. Despite the high sugar content, a tablespoon of sorghum syrup does offer 210 milligrams of potassium.
