How to Treat Acne Excoriee

By Erica Roth ; Updated July 18, 2017

Acne excoriee is the result of popping a pimple or otherwise picking at your blemishes. The acne itself develops in response to hormonal changes in your body; the lesions are made worse and can potentially become infected through the compulsive behavior of picking at the spots. The New Zealand Dermatological Society's Dermnet NZ information service reports that stress and depression are two conditions that can cause you to pick at your acne. Obsessive-compulsive disorder can be another condition that coincides with acne excoriee. Treating acne excoriee includes both physical treatment and behavioral changes.

  1. Apply topical acne medication containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid to your pimples, as directed by your doctor or the product packaging. The active ingredient in the medication can clear the acne, but will be ineffective if you open up the lesions each time they begin to heal.

  2. Speak to a therapist to get you on the road to recovery. A mental health professional can diagnose associated conditions, suggests coping strategies for your stress and help you learn to change your behavior.

  3. Practice self-regulation by writing a statement that clearly spells out how you will cope with the urge to excoriate your acne. Think about the ways in which you can stop yourself from starting to pick and what you will do instead. For instance, if work stress leads to your skin-picking, tell yourself that you'll take a five-minute break when the pressure builds. Include incentives for yourself to celebrate your success.

  4. Take antidepressant or antipsychotic drugs to help you break your habit and eliminate your acne excoriee. The September 2000 issue of "Dermatology Times" reports that a drug called olanzapine may be helpful. Dermnet NZ explains that SSRI antidepressant drugs can also help control obsessive-compulsive behavior.
