What Are the Benefits of Pretzels?

Pretzels can be a healthy snack, with vitamins, minerals and fiber, and whole-wheat pretzels contain even more fiber. Pretzels can be helpful in losing weight because are low in calories, and they are a tasty treat many children enjoy. Pretzels are also low in saturated and total fat.


The United States Department of Agriculture says a healthy diet is one that includes carbohydrates. Some carbohydrates contain fiber, which offers protection against heart disease and promotes enhanced bowel function. The National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse recommends starches for each meal you consume, both those with and without diabetes.


Pretzels contain calcium that your body needs, particularly for strong bones and teeth. Along with magnesium, also found in pretzels, calcium helps keep the cardiovascular system healthy. Other benefits from calcium are better blood coagulation, reduced blood pressure, healthy nerves and protection against colon cancer and osteoporosis. People who suffer with anxiety or depression may also be helped by the calcium in pretzels. Calcium also aids in restful sleep.

B Vitamins

Pretzels offer the benefits of the B vitamins thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid and vitamin B-6. Thiamine contributes to healthy nerves and helps in the normal development of children. Riboflavin helps to promote energy better eyesight. Niacin aids in digestion. Pantothenic acid works to prevent an elevation in cholesterol, and it is beneficial as an antioxidant. Vitamin B-6 works to enhance immunity.

Folic Acid

Pretzels also can include folic acid, a vitamin helps to make enzymes and offers protection against anemia and can aid with leukemia, lowering homocysteine and combating alcoholism.
