What Are the Benefits of Cinnamon Cassia Oil on Lips?

By Brian Lewis

Cassia oil, a common ingredient in many plumping-products, makes a great, natural alternative to expensive cosmetics.

What is Cassia Oil?

Cassia oil, also known as Chinese cinnamon or cinnamon bark, is an extract of Cinnamomum cassia, native to Eastern Asia. It is a skin irritant, thus when applied to the lips it achieves the bee-stung appeal that many cosmetics aim to imitate. Most products currently available on the market that claim to do this use cassia oil as a main ingredient, while mixing in other inorganic chemicals to produce specific smells or colors, such as are found in lip-plumping glosses.

How it Works

Cassia oil is a dermal irritant, dermal sensitizer and a mucus membrane irritant. When applied to the lips it irritates the mucosa of the lips and increases blood flow to the region. This in turn causes swelling and the appearance of a bee-stung pout when applied in the same manner as a gloss or balm.

Unexpected Benefits

Not only does cassia oil induce desirable swelling in the lips, but it also possesses other unexpected benefits. Cassia oil is a relaxant, so when applied it can act as a calming agent, soothing the digestive system and combating motion sickness, as well as helping to reduce stress and anxiety. Cassia oil can also neutralize unsavory odors, making it a useful breath freshener!

A Great Alternative!

Cassia oil is an all-natural, inexpensive way to achieve what so many cosmetics offer to do. While many of these glosses and plumpers cost more than $20.00, cassia oil generally retails for roughly a quarter of that, and is completely free of harmful chemicals and toxins. By diluting just a few drops of cassia oil in water, you can make your own lip plumper for almost nothing. If you are looking to incorporate a more natural approach to you beauty regimen, cassia oil is a great place to start!
