How to Treat Extreme Exhaustion in the First Trimester

Exhaustion is a common symptom of pregnancy during the first trimester, leaving many expectant mothers struggling to stay awake until bedtime. Several factors may contribute to your extreme exhaustion. According to Babycenter, the increased progesterone may leave you feeling exhausted. Other explanations include sleep interruptions due to the pregnancy and the increased activity of the body to grow the baby.

  1. Go to bed earlier to give your body more rest. Babycenter recommends listening to your body's signs to know when to head to bed.

  2. Cut back on extra commitments that drain what little energy you have left. Take a break from volunteering, social gatherings and other activities until you overcome the extreme exhaustion.

  3. Restructure your work day if possible. Babycenter recommends scaling back your hours or working from home or on weekends to balance out your time.

  4. Nap when possible, either at your desk during lunch time or at home. Set an alarm if you take a snooze at your desk so you don't oversleep.

  5. Relax when you are at home instead of doing a lot of housework and chores that will zap your energy reserves. Hire someone to handle the cleaning and housework or get the rest of the family involved to lighten your load.

  6. Add about 300 healthy calories to your diet each day, a recommendation from Babycenter. Eat a balance of healthy foods, including those high in protein for fuel and iron to prevent iron deficiency anemia.

  7. Exercise daily to boost your energy, even if you feel exhausted. Babycenter recommends taking a short walk to overcome feelings of exhaustion.
