Supplements to Reduce Triglycerides

Your body needs triglycerides for energy, but high levels of triglycerides in the body over a long period of time can be damaging to your health. According to Mother Nature, high triglyceride levels are associated with low levels of the good cholesterol in our bodies, and both of those are associated with vascular disease. Managing high triglycerides is a good way to control high levels of the bad cholesterol, and low levels of both are good for the heart.

Guggul

According to "Lower Cholesterol News," this herb can reduce triglyceride levels by up to 30 percent. It also increases good cholesterol , or HDL, and lowers bad cholesterol, or LDL, in a short period of time. Guggul has antioxidant properties, which are thought to help lower triglyceride levels.

Fenugreek

Fenugreek has been shown to reduce triglyceride levels in just a 20-day period, according to Vita Cost. The site recommends consuming 25 to 50 grams of defatted fenugreek per day. Sloan-Kettering also found that 25 grams per day of fenugreek lowered triglyceride levels.

Garlic

According to Vita Cost, garlic can reduce triglyceride levels by between 8 and 27 percent over a four-month period of time. The website The Body says that garlic also can prevent triglycerides from absorbing into the bloodstream after a meal that’s high in animal fat.

Turmeric

The website Life 123 cites curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, as being effective in lowering triglycerides. The site also cites turmeric’s antioxidant properties, which can prevent damage to good cholesterol, or LDH. Elevated LDH levels are associate with low triglyceride levels.

Green Tea

Green tea contains catechins, which are a type of bioflavonoid. Catechins have antioxidant properties which, according to Health Central, can lower triglyceride levels by up to 20 percent. Health Central recommends between six and 12 servings of brewed green tea per day to get the full benefits.
