Appetite Suppressants Without Stimulants

By Jody Braverman ; Updated July 18, 2017

Trying to trim your calorie intake to shed pounds can be agonizing, especially when you feel hungry all the time. Not being able to resist the temptation to reach for a snack can lead to going over your daily calorie budget and, ultimately, weight-loss failure. Natural appetite suppressants without stimulants can help curb your cravings and keep you feeling satisfied without revving you up.

Plain Old Water

Look no further than your faucet to control your appetite. Not only is thirst sometimes mistaken for hunger, but also water helps fill up your belly so you feel less hungry. Researchers at The American Chemical Society found that people who drank 2 cups of water before a meal ate 75 to 90 fewer calories at the meal than those who didn't drink water before eating. A subsequent study by the researchers, results of which were presented at the 240th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in 2010, found that people who drank 2 cups of water before each meal lost nearly 5 pounds more than the people who didn't drink water over the 12-week study -- no stimulants required.

Filling Fiber

The material that makes up the cell walls of plants passes through your body mostly unchanged and unabsorbed, providing few calories to your diet. That same material, found in ample amounts in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, also helps fill up your belly and suppress your appetite. According to Mark Hyman, M.D., a specific type of fiber sold in supplement form called glucomannan is especially effective at controlling appetite, but talk to your doctor before taking any kind of supplement.
