The Active Ingredients in Reactin Allergy Medication
Reactine Allergy is an over-the-counter allergy symptom relief medication sold in Canada. The manufacturers of Reactine Allergy also make Zyrtec. Reactine Allergy provides 24-hour symptom relief from both indoor and outdoor allergy symptoms. Reactine Allergy comes in three formulas for adults and one specifically designed for children. According the Reactine website, it is the number one allergy relief medication sold in Canada. Reactine Allergy is a second-generation allergy relief medication, which means it does not use first-generation medications like diphenhydramine or chlorpheniramine that cause drowsiness.
The Reactine Allergy website warns individuals with liver or kidney issues, or who are pregnant, to consult with a physician prior to taking Reactine.
Reactine Allergy has one active ingredient: cetirizine. According to the National Institutes of Health, cetirizine is a second-generation antihistamine used to block histamine from attaching to the receptor sites in the body. Cetirizine does not cause drowsiness. It provides relief hay fever symptoms like runny nose and itchy eyes and throat. According to Drugs.com, cetirizine should be taken as directed and can be taken with or without food.
There are two adult formulas of Reactine Allergy: regular and extra strength. Both contain cetirizine in amounts of 5 mg and 10 mg respectively.
Reactine Allergy and Sinus Adult Formula
Reactine Allergy & Sinus contains 5 mg of cetirizine and 120 mg of pseudophedrine to relieve nasal congestion and sinus pressure. According to the National Institutes of Health, pseudophedrine is classified as a decongestant and works by narrowing the nasal passage blood vessels and reducing fluid in the ear canals that cause sinus pressure. Reactine Allergy and Sinus relieves symptoms for both indoor and outdoor allergies. Adult dosage is one pill every 12 hours as needed for relief from allergy symptoms.
Reactine Children's Formula
Reactine has a formula specifically designed for children with allergy symptoms. Called Reactine Kid's Syrup, it contains 5 mg of cetirizine and provides 24-hour relief for children ages 2 to 12. The children's formula comes in grape flavor with no artificial dyes or alcohol. The Reactine website states that the children's formula does not aggravate asthmatic symptoms in children.
The dosage amount for children ages 2 to 6 is 1 tsp. for all-day relief. The teaspoon amount can be given 1/2 tsp. at a time, once in the morning and again at night.
Children ages 6 to 12 should take 2 tsp. for allergy symptom relief. The dose can also be divided to 1 tsp. in the morning and 1 tsp. at night.
