Fat Removal Methods

By Christina McDonald-Legg ; Updated July 18, 2017

Whether you are looking to lose a lot of weight or just tone and contour specific body parts, there are fat-removal methods to suit every taste. Diet and exercise are key components to fighting unwanted fat, but if this isn’t enough, research will take you a long way in deciding which fat removal method is best for you.

Surgical Liposuction

Liposuction is the most common cosmetic procedure in the United States, according to the Mayo Clinic. This fat-removal method is not a weight loss alternative, but rather a way to isolate fatty areas and remove the fatty tissue through a suction technique. As you gain weight, fat cells increase in size and volume. Liposuction decreases these fat cells in your specified area, offering an improved body contour by removing the top layers of fat. Since this is a surgical procedure, there are some risks involved, including infection, uneven body contours, sagging skin and, rarely, blood clots in the lungs or legs.

Laser Liposuction

A new, FDA-approved method for removing fat is laser liposuction. This technique is similar to surgical liposuction, but is less invasive. A laser is used to dissolve specific areas of fat and tighten the surrounding skin. This outpatient procedure is performed in an office and doesn’t require the use of a general anesthetic. You may experience some pain and bruising for a few days after laser liposuction, but the procedure itself is pain free. There are a wide variety of minimally invasive fat-removal procedures that use lasers, including SmartLipo, SmoothLipo, SlimLipo, LipoLite and CoolLipo.

Ultrasound Fat Removal

This non-invasive fat-removal technique uses ultrasound waves to break apart and get rid of fat. Three or four treatments are required to achieve results. During each session, an ultrasonic probe is placed on the skin, massaging the skin so the ultrasound waves penetrate the skin, causing the fat cells to die. The body then flushes out the unwanted cells. LipoSonix is an example of ultrasound fat removal, using high-intensity ultrasound to melt and remove pockets of fat. UltraShape also uses ultrasound pulses to target fat cells.

This quick, non-invasive method of removing fat is simply an injection that dissolves precise pockets of fat. This fat removal method injects conventional or homeopathic medicines, vitamins, minerals and amino acids into the mesoderm layer of the skin. The injection stimulates the fat cells to release fat, as well as break down cellulite. Mild bruising is often experienced, but clears up quickly. Laser therapy is often used in conjunction with mesotherapy in order to tighten the skin over the dissolved fat.
