American Ginseng Benefits for Men

By Juniper Russo

Both American ginseng and its relative, Korean ginseng, contain complex medicinal compounds known as ginsenosides. These potent antioxidant compounds have been used for centuries to improve overall well being and prevent several common diseases. American ginseng offers a variety of important health benefits to people of all ages and genders, but its medicinal properties are particularly useful for men. Consult a health care provider before using ginseng or any other medicinal herb, particularly if you have a medical condition.

Heart Health

Men are much more likely to experience coronary heart disease than women according to the American Heart Association. Men have higher rates of heart attack, stroke, hypertension and high cholesterol, and people with heart conditions may benefit from treatment with American ginseng. The National Institutes of Health reports that ginseng may reduce oxygen damage to LDL, or "bad," cholesterol.

Fertility Support

American ginseng may help to improve fertility in men. According to the NIH, ginseng supplements may help improve the quantity and motility of sperm. Practitioners of naturopathy may recommend ginseng as a treatment for low sperm count, a common cause of infertility in men.

Sexual Health

American ginseng is widely regarded as an "adaptogen" because it prevents stress-related fluctuations in sleep, mood, appetite and sexual response. Traditionally, healers used ginseng to prevent erectile dysfunction related to stress. According to the NIH, early evidence suggests that ginseng may help reduce symptoms of erectile dysfunction, but there is not enough conclusive evidence to support this use.

Cancer Prevention

The University of Maryland Medical Center reports that American ginseng possesses powerful anti-cancer properties. Ginseng appears to inhibit the growth of colorectal tumors and protect cells from DNA damage. American ginseng's powerful anti-tumor properties are extremely important for men's health, since men are significantly more likely to develop cancer than women.

According to a 2009 report in "Medical News Today," men in the United Kingdom are 40% more likely than women to die of cancer. American ginseng may help prevent some forms of cancer, but it can not replace the role of a healthy lifestyle.
