Thisilyn Cleanse is a 15-day program that involves three different herbal formulations. Each formula has different active ingredients, dosages and directions. It’s important to check with a health care provider before beginning each phase of the program to ensure the product ingredients don’t interact with your medications or worsen existing health conditions. Each formulation also can cause side effects.
Whole Body Detox
The Thisilyn Whole Body Detox formula lists cranberry concentrate as its top ingredient. Cranberry does not usually produce side effects, but can cause allergic reactions including hives, tightness in your chest or difficulty breathing, according to Drugs.com. The burdock in this formulation also is generally considered safe, but poisoning from the root tea has been reported to cause headache, blurred vision, drowsiness, slurred speech, restlessness, coordination loss, seizures, flushing, a dry mouth and nose, lack of sweating and fever due to contamination with atropine-containing plants like belladonna. Burdock also can trigger hypoglycemia, meaning low blood sugar, if you are diabetic, and can raise risk for hypoglycemia if taken along with drugs taken to treat diabetes, according to “The Essential Herb-Drug-Vitamin Interaction Guide,” by George T. Grossberg and Barry Fox. The Oregon grape in this formulation can worsen jaundice in infants so pregnant or nursing women should avoid it, advises Michigan State University.
The Thisilyn Fiber Blend contains psyllium as its main ingredient. Taking psyllium with inadequate amounts of water can cause intestinal blockages, according to Medline Plus. You are especially at risk for a gastrointestinal tract obstruction if you’ve had previous bowel surgery or problems. You also need to avoid psyllium if you have a throat problem or difficulty swallowing. If you are allergic to melon, English plantain pollen or grass pollen use caution because you may have cross-sensitivity to psyllium. Serious allergic reactions have been reported with psyllium, reports Medline Plus, including the life-threatening condition called anaphylaxis, difficulty breathing, hives and rashes. Psyllium also can lower blood-glucose levels, increasing risk for hypoglycemia if you are diabetic or take diabetes medicines.
Thisilyn’s Herbal Digestive Sweep contains cascara sagrada, which is a stimulant laxative. This laxative is believed to prompt bowel movements by irritating your bowel tissue and drawing fluid into your intestines, according to Drugs.com. Cascara sagrada can cause cramps, colic and other abdominal discomfort, advise Grossberg and Fox. If you have any rectal bleeding or a history of stomach or intestinal problems such as a blockage, ulcers or Crohn’s disease you need to avoid this herb, advise the experts at Drugs.com. This herb can also reduce the effectiveness of iron supplements, increase risk of irregular heartbeat when taken with an array of drugs including acebutolol and insulin, and raise the risk for low blood potassium levels when taken with drugs such as acetazolamide, chlorothiazide and digitalis, advise Grossberg and Fox. It can cause fluid and electrolyte loss when taken with docusate and senna, and interferes with action of indomethiacin.
