Remedies Using White Vinegar
The use of vinegar as a home remedy may be 10,000 years old, according to the Vinegar Institute. As early as 5,000 B.C., vinegar had become a popular condiment for the Babylonians. As the medicinal of use vinegar evolved, it even found its way to battlefields as a treatment for scurvy during the Civil War and for wounds in World War I. Popular white vinegar home remedies include treatments for skin, hair, ears and infection control.
The Mayo Clinic recommends vinegar as a home remedy for skin inflammations, including folliculitis and impetigo. For folliculitis, a condition that causes inflammation of hair follicles on the scalp, make a wet compress with white vinegar on a clean cloth. Apply it to inflamed areas of the scalp to soothe the skin and relieve symptoms. Impetigo is a contagious skin condition that mainly affects children. Red sores around the mouth are the most common symptom. To treat the inflammation, prepare a solution of 1 tbsp. of white vinegar mixed in 1 pint of water, make a compress and soak the area for at least 20 minutes. Then remove the dried scabs and apply antibiotic cream until the condition subsides.
The candida yeast fungus is a common cause of vaginitis. Symptoms include itching, redness and swollen membranes in the vagina and the vulva area. The University of Maryland suggests white vinegar as a treatment for this condition. To combat the symptoms and decrease an overgrowth of the normally harmless candida yeast, douche daily with a solution of 1 tbs. of white vinegar mixed in 1 pint of water. Use this solution for 10 days to two weeks.
Swimmer’s ear, or otitis externa, is an infection or inflammation that occurs in the ear canal, often caused by bacteria and fungi that thrive in moisture. Common symptoms include swollen, itchy ears, sometimes with ear pain. Once your condition clears up with medication or self-treatment, Familydoctor.org suggests that you use a few drops of a solution of equal amounts of white vinegar and alcohol prior to swimming to prevent future problems.
Dandruff and Lice
White vinegar can help prevent dandruff problems, according to Pioneerthinking.com. Mix 1/2 cup of vinegar with the same amount of water and apply to your hair before shampooing to remove dandruff on the scalp. Repeat this treatment twice a week to keep the flakes from returning. Drugs.com recommends applying white vinegar to your child’s hair to make removal of head lice much quicker and less difficult. The vinegar helps to loosen the nits' hold on the hair strands. It also soothes the scalp and relieves inflammation.
