Yohimbe Benefits

By Robert Rottkamp

Yohimbe bark extract contains the active chemical yohimbine, also known as indole alkaloid, and is found in the bark of the Pausinystalia yohimbe tree. The yohimbe tree is a tall evergreen native to Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon and the Congo. Yohimbine hydrochloride is available as a prescription drug in the United States as the standardized form of yohimbine. Yohimbe promotes sexual health, works as an antioxidant and may help recovery from anxiety disorders.

Sexual Health

Yohimbe is an aphrodisiac for men and women and fights impotence. In a study entitled Yohimbine in the Treatment of Orgasmic Dysfunction, at the Institute of Urology and Nephrology in London, doctors concluded that yohimbine is a useful treatment option for orgasmic dysfunction. In the test 16 of 29 men suffering from orgasmic dysfunction were cured of that issue after taking 20mg of Yohimbine.

Antioxidant

According to online supplement authority, Bodybuildingforyou.com, yohimbe is a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants are important to your health because they protect cells against the effects free radicals. Free radicals are produced by the body when it breaks down food or if you are exposed to tobacco smoke or radiation. Free radicals damage cells, contribute to heart disease and cancer.

Anxiety Disorders

Yohimbe can help quell anxiety by enhancing the effects of the natural release of adrenalin, according to findings at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute. In response to physical and mental stress adrenaline prompts physiological changes associated with fear and anxiety such as increased heart and metabolism rates. Yohimbe outperformed propanolol, which is a medication used to blunt the physiological effects of adrenaline in order to treat symptoms of anxiety disorders.
