Jane Fonda likes to tell it like it is. Whether it’s on the topic of plastic surgery (yes, she’s had it) or sex toys (she wears one as a necklace, because why not?), the 80-year-old actress is always ready to open up about seemingly uncomfy topics. This week the breast cancer survivor made a shocking new confession about her health: She recently had a cancerous growth removed from her lower lip.
While promoting her Netflix series “Grace and Frankie” with costar Lily Tomlin on Monday, Fonda rocked some bandages on her lower lip. Before anyone could ask or make any assumptions, Fonda set the record straight.
“I just want to explain the bandage. I just had a cancer taken from my lip,” Fonda said during an interview for AOL’s BUILD Series. “I thought it was going to heal in time before I came before you, but it’s fine. I just want to explain it. I don’t normally go around like this.”
The topic came up later in the day, when she was probed by none other than Howard Stern, who voiced his concern for the star. “Hey, listen, the world is falling apart. What’s a lip?” she quipped. “Yeah, they did [biopsy it]. I’m going to be fine, thanks.”
According to the Huffington Post, Fonda’s rep wouldn’t elaborate on the cancer or treatment.
However, lip cancer is the most common type of cancer that affects the mouth and occurs most frequently with tobacco users or people who spend lots of time in the sun without any protection. (Always remember to lather your lips with SPF before heading outdoors.)
If noticed early on, survival rates are up to 90 percent, so it isn’t one of the more deadly forms of cancer. Signs include irritation, sores that don’t heal after one to two weeks, small lumps or thickening and pain or numbness.
Jane isn’t the only celebrity who is a living, breathing public service announcement for cancer. Last year Kate Walsh revealed she was diagnosed with a brain tumor, and Maria Menounos also revealed she had a brain tumor removed. Michael Douglas revealed he had near-fatal throat cancer back in 2010, and HPV — he likely contracted through oral sex — was the culprit. And Julia Rancic, Angelina Jolie and Sheryl Crow have all opened up about breast cancer struggles, urging women to get stay current with their yearly mammograms.
If you ever feel like something isn’t right, it’s always best to contact your doctor as soon as possible. Catching any sort of cancer sooner rather than later can save your life.
