Food-related Super Bowl ads have a habit of being all beer and junk food all the time. But times are changing, and this year’s selection of funny (and sometimes subversive) ads included a number of products that support healthier living — from avocados to antioxidant water to wine. Getting pretty refined over there, football fans!
While there was no shortage of ads for Budweiser, Coca-Cola and Doritos last night, it’s clear that there’s a trend among consumers for healthier products, and companies are making the ads to prove it. Check out our favorite product placements that made us think twice about making another run for the seven-layer dip during the game.
1. Avocados From Mexico
The secret is out in this ad from Avocados From Mexico: The green guys have good fats! Of course, we didn’t need a secret society to tell us all the great benefits — we knew that avocados also boost the health of your nervous system and protect your heart.
2. Bai Antioxidant Infusions
Christopher Walken and Justin Timberlake join forces to say Bai Bai Bai to calorie-laden sports drinks and hello to Bai five-calorie waters. The typical sports drink can pack 14 grams of carbs, including extra sugars.
Water brand Lifewater used a John Legend soundtrack and rain turning into rainbow-colored street art to promote their new line of bottles featuring limited-edition art. Drinking more water is never a bad idea — it keeps your skin hydrated and helps you lose weight.
4. Wonderful Pistachios
Cartoon elephant Ernie is on the treadmill working off his baby elephant fat when he learns that pistachios are a good source of protein. He gets our vote for cutest #fitspo! Pistachios can also help lower bad cholesterol.
5. Yellowtail Wine
It may be all fun and kangaroos in this ad from Australian winemaker Yellowtail, but red wine has a leg up on Super Bowl favorite beer when it comes to heart-healthy choices. Antioxidants found in the skin of red grapes are believed to improve heart health with moderate consumption.
6. Fiji Water
This ad for Fiji Water made us want more than a tall, chilled glass of the clear stuff — it also made us want to book a vacation to the islands!
