What Makes the Body Burn Fat?

By Sarah DeWitt Ince

The human body stores and burns fat continually to survive. Fat serves a very important purpose because without fat we would die. Fat cushions our organs, and our body mainly stores fat to be used as energy later. Healthy fats such as those found in fish oil also lubricate the joints which increases our mobility and helps to calm inflammation. In order to be healthy, our body needs to carry the proper balance of fat. When we have too much or too little fat, our body can become out of balance. Our body mass index is calculated based on our height. Most people should have a BMI that falls between 18 and 25. Overview

The Purpose of Fat

The human body stores and burns fat continually to survive. Fat serves a very important purpose because without fat we would die. Fat cushions our organs, and our body mainly stores fat to be used as energy later. Healthy fats such as those found in fish oil also lubricate the joints which increases our mobility and helps to calm inflammation. In order to be healthy, our body needs to carry the proper balance of fat. When we have too much or too little fat, our body can become out of balance. Our body mass index is calculated based on our height. Most people should have a BMI that falls between 18 and 25. The standard American diet and sedentary lifestyle causes many people to become too fat, so burning fat is a major concern for many people.

Triggering the Fat Buring Process

The body burns fat through a metabolic process that involves using calories and water. The act of exercise itself stimulates fat burning because the body needs to use energy in order to move. The more a person moves, the more energy the body uses. As a person begins to work out, the body pulls energy from fat by using raw materials within the body. In order to keep the person moving, the body must grab this energy directly from the fat cells where it is stored.

The body takes calories from proteins, carbohydrates and fats during a workout and any type of physical activity including sleeping. The body also uses these raw materials to burn fat when fewer calories than what is needed are consumed or when a person is physically active. However, when a person continually tries to lose weight by just eating less, the body will eventually start to burn muscle as well as fat. Proper diet and exercise is essential in order to lose weight and burn fat the healthy way.

The amount of fat that is burned really depends on the level of raw materials the body has. For instance, if the body has a high amount of carbohydrates then the body will use those up as energy first before moving into burning fat storage. This is why many people tend to lose a lot of fat on low carbohydrate diets. However, always remember that the body needs carbs in order to function properly, so balance is key.

It is also very important to continually change the type of work you do and increase your resistance. Your body may become used to the same type of workout after six weeks and at this point your body will become less efficient at burning fat. In order to keep yourself in great shape and burn the maximum amount of fat, be sure to change your workout routine often. Always mix things up.

Burning Fat Automatically

Weight training and cardio help to build muscle. A person with more muscle mass will burn fat automatically even long after a workout is over. This is why many trainers say that weight training is essential in order to burn fat effectively and keep it off. It is very important to get the proper form down when using weights and work several different muscle groups in order to have the proper balance of strength.
