How to Restore Golf Grips

Ken Venturi, former PGA tour professional and longtime golf analyst, once advertised for a prominent golf grip manufacturer by saying, "If you play once a week, regrip once a year." That's great advice, but what if you want that new grip feel but don't play that often or cannot afford to regrip once a year? There are some commercially available cleaning agents specifically designed for golf grips on the market, but simply cleaning the grips with soap and water will often restore them to a satisfactory feel with minimal effort or expense.

Step 1

Mix dishwashing soap and water in a bucket or sink. Use approximately one-tenth of an ounce of soap per gallon of water.

Step 2

Wet the scouring pad and scrub the grip lightly. Let the abrasiveness of the pad do the work. The intent is to remove the dirt and oils from the grip without damaging the rubber.

Step 3

Rinse the grip thoroughly under running water. Any leftover soap residue could cause the grip to become slippery during your next round of play.

Step 4

Dry the grip with a towel. Leave the club out of your golf bag for at least one hour to allow the grip to dry completely before use.

Step 5

Repeat Steps 1 through 4 for your remaining grips.
