How to Play PIG in Basketball

By Contributor

This is a fun and simple game to play with two or more players that helps you practice and hone basketball shooting skills. It is played with the same structure and rules as HORSE but plays quicker and faster since you have only three letters. Play PIG as part of a basketball practice or camp or play in the backyard when you only have a few moments before dinner. The game only consists of shooting and there is no defending so this remains a calm, easy game, especially for kids.

Gather two or more people to play PIG around a basketball hoop and a basketball.

Decide who goes first by choosing randomly. Choose the next birthday or play Rock Paper Scissors to determine who goes first.

Shoot a basic shot from anywhere on the court. It can be a standing or moving basketball shot, such as from the three point line or as a lay up. If the first player makes the basket, the next person must follow the same shot from the same position and successfully make it as well.

Try to make the shot exactly as the first person, if he completed the first shot. If you miss, you have earned the letter "P" in the word PIG. Continue through the players until everyone has either made the shot or earned a "P."

Move to the second player who makes an original shot that everyone tries to duplicate. All the players must now recreate this shot from the same position and form as the first player. Continue until all the players have taken this shot.

Eliminate any player that spells the whole word "PIG." The winner is the last person who has not completely spelled the word "PIG."

Vary the game by changing the shot and leader as soon as the first person misses the recreation shot. The next person in line then takes the lead by creating a new shot.

Change the game again by continuing to make the same shot over and over again until someone in the game misses it. If it is a simple shot, everybody might make the shot several times before someone misses. That person would then earn the next letter.
