How to Play Pebble Beach

By Matthew Fortuna

One of the most famous golf courses in the United States, Pebble Beach is also one of the most exclusive and expensive. The past site of PGA major championships and wins by Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Tiger Woods, the course is known for its beach-lined fairways and pristine conditions. While Pebble Beach is not a private course, there are certain steps that must be taken to play the course if you are planning a golf vacation.

Book a stay at one of the Pebble Beach golf resorts. The Lodge at Pebble Beach, the Inn at Spanish Bay or the Casa Palermo are available. Your stay should be planned around six months in advance to ensure yourself a tee time. Only those staying at one of these three properties can make a tee time at the course.

Book a round at the course after booking your resort. You can do this on the website or by calling rhe course. Be sure you are there when there is no tournament.

Show up at the course on the day of your round. Be on time and be ready to play. While there are mulligans allowed on the course, there is no mulligan on the first tee box.

Save money by not staying at one of Pebble Beach's properties. Show up the day you want to golf and get on the waiting list. You can only sign up on the day you hope to play. You will get on the course only from the waiting list if a tee time is canceled or skipped--and you are on top of the list.
