As of late 2010, Nike golf had three main series of irons: VR Pro Series, SQ Machspeed and Slingshot. Each iron set has distinctive specifications to suit a wide variety of skill levels from novice to professional. Shaft specifications can be altered to fit individual preferences, though all stock shafts are available in X-stiff, stiff and regular flexes of True Temper steel.
VR Pro Series
Nike designed its VR Pro Series irons in only blade form or in a combo set. The combo set consists of pocket cavity low irons, for forgiveness, split-cavity mid-irons, for control and workability, and blade high irons and wedges, for maximum feel. In the standard set, 2-, 3- and 4-iron have 18, 21 and 24 degrees of loft; the 5-, 6- and 7-iron have 27, 31 and 35 degrees; and the 8, 9 and pitching wedge have 39, 43 and 47 degrees. These irons work best in the hands of an experienced golfer.
SQ Machspeed Irons
Nike designed its SQ Machspeed irons with a slight cavity-back undercutting an overlapping PowerBow. The cavity helps create forgiveness on off-center shots while the undercut and PowerBow work to widen the sweet spot, making it more accessible, and also lower the center of gravity, producing high trajectory ball flights with soft landings. In the standard set, 3-, 4- and 5-iron have 20, 23 and 26 degrees of loft; 6-, 7- and 8-iron have 29, 33 and 37 degrees; and the 9-iron and pitching wedge are 41 and 45 degrees. Lower wedges are also available in Approach (50 degrees), Sand (55 degrees) and Loft (60 degrees). These clubs cater to golfers of an intermediate skill set.
Nike designed its Slingshot irons with a slight cavity-back undercutting an overlapping PowerBow as well, but with one large difference. In place of a traditional 3-iron, a 3 High Launch (HL) hybrid club is presented. With its shallow face and large rounded head, this club combines the accuracy of an iron with the forgiveness and power of a wood. In a standard set, 3HL, 4- and 5-irons have 20, 23 and 26 degrees of loft; 6-, 7- and 8-iron have 30, 34 and 38 degrees; and the 9-iron, pitching and sand wedge are 42, 46 and 54 degrees. These clubs are best suited for novice golfers.
