How to Use Slim-Mate Cassia Angustifolia Senna Tea for Dieting

Cassia angustifolia is an Asian herb that is used as a natural laxative and diuretic. More commonly known as senna, the leaves of this herb are made into a tea and marketed as a weight-loss aid under the brand name Slim-Mate. While proponents of cassia angustifolia senna tea claim it helps dieters shed unwanted pounds, the medical community argues that any weight loss is temporary at best, resulting from the increased elimination of waste matter. Use caution when performing a senna tea diet cleanse to avoid unwanted side effects.

Dilute the tea at the start of the diet cleanse to avoid stomach irritation. Place one tea bag into a saucepan filled with 4 cups of boiling water. Cover the pan, move it off the heat and allow the tea bag to steep for three minutes.

Take a potassium supplement during the senna tea diet cleanse to reduce the tea's potassium-reducing effects. The recommended daily intake of potassium is 4.7 g, according to the Colorado State University Extension. Use the potassium supplement as directed on the bottle.

Drink plenty of liquids to keep yourself well-hydrated during the diet cleanse. Take in at least eight, 8 oz. glasses of water per day; 100 percent juice or unsweetened teas are also good choices. Green and oolong teas have the added benefit of helping to increase your metabolism.

Repeat Step 1 to taper off of the senna tea at the end of the 10-day diet cleanse, if desired. Avoid drinking the senna tea for more than 14 consecutive days. Senna tea can also be brewed by steeping tea bags in cold water for 12 hours at a ratio of one tea bag to every cup of water, which lowers the amount of resin in the tea and may reduce the occurrence of stomach cramping that many people experience during senna tea diet cleanses.

Consult your doctor before using Slim-Mate senna tea as a weight-loss aid; this is particularly important if you are taking calcium channel blockers or other prescription medications. Stop the diet cleanse and see your doctor if you experience side effects such as nausea, dizziness, abdominal pain or diarrhea. Women who are pregnant, nursing or have an inflamed uterus should not drink senna tea. People who suffer from abdominal hernias, heart disease, anemia, ulcers, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, hemorrhoids, and liver or kidney diseases should also avoid teas with cassia angustifolia. Prolonged use of senna diet teas may cause liver damage, kidney damage and other serious health problems. Senna teas are not recommended for children.
