Grants for a Nonprofit Sporting Club

By Amanda Kerr

Nonprofit sports clubs may operate programs related to youth or adult sports or recreational activities. Baseball, football, golf, tennis, shooting sports and soccer clubs rely on funding from outside sources in order for athletes to compete. There are a variety of sources and foundations that offer funding and grants to nonprofit sports clubs and programs, including major-league teams.

Local Organizations

Local community and corporate foundations, as well as local businesses, offer grants or funding to local sports clubs. These foundations often support youth or recreational activities for members of their community. For example, the Kiwanis Club of Flint, Michigan, awarded over $20,000 in grants to area nonprofits, including the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Flint and a local Boys Scouts troop for sports activities. The Chandler Service Club in Chandler, Arizona, has awarded grants to the Chandler Youth Baseball, Girls' Softball and American Legion Sports groups.

For example, the Minnesota Twins awards grants through the Minnesota Twins Community Fund. Coaching grants are awarded to nonprofit baseball or softball leagues to recruit good coaches. The Twins Field for Kids Program awards up to $10,000 to schools and nonprofits in the Upper Midwest and Southwest Florida area for field renovations and construction. Tournament grants are awarded by the Minnesota Twins Community Fund to help nonprofit sports clubs hold tournaments.

The Arizona Cardinals National League Football (NFL) team awards grants to nonprofits in their area that benefit the youth and community in Arizona. Recent recipients of grants from the Cardinals include the San Tan Softball Little League and East Valley Youth League of Football.

Up to $200,000 is available to nonprofit sports clubs to renovate community football fields.

Major League Baseball (MLB) offers funding to nonprofit sports clubs and teams, schools and nonprofit organizations through the Baseball Tomorrow Fund. This fund provides up to $50,000 for youth baseball and softball programs. Grants may be used to purchase equipment, uniforms, field renovations or other items the team may need. There are four application deadlines for the grant program.

The United States Tennis Association awards a variety of grants to nonprofit sports clubs, teams, leagues, schools and local nonprofits to enhance the availability of tennis to citizens of the United States.
