How to Create a 10-Team League Schedule

By Robert Preston

Running an enjoyable league, whether it is a fantasy sports league or an athletic league, can be a difficult and at times frustrating task. One of the more maddening tasks can be devising a league schedule, which can prove to be a hair-pulling endeavor if the proper steps aren't taken.

One Division

Cut 45 slips of paper big enough to write "# v. #" on.

Label the slips with one of each possible pairings of the numbers 1 through 10, using the "# v. #" format.

Arrange the slips into nine groups of five, so that no group has the same number twice. These groups will represent the first five weeks of the season.

Assign each team in your league a number.

Cut 15 slips, and label them with every pairing of the numbers 1 through 6.

Arrange the slips into five groups of three slips, with no numbers repeated in any group. The numbers on the slip correspond to the placing in the standings of your teams after the first nine weeks. The bottom four teams are eliminated.

The playoffs will be in the two weeks following the second batch of games, with first place playing fourth place, and second playing third, and the winners facing off in week 16.

Two Divisions

Cut 20 slips of paper big enough to write "#A v. #A" on.

Label the slips with every possible pairing of 1A through 5A, with two slips of each pairing.

Repeat Steps 1 and 2 using the "#B v. #B" format.

Cut 25 slips, and label them with so that every "#A" team is paired with every "#B" team once.

Arrange the 65 slips into 13 groups of five slips so that no number appears in the same group twice.

The first round of the playoffs will be in week 14, with the second-place team in each group playing the third-place team from that same group.

The winners of those matches will play their group's top team in week 15, with the winners of each division championship game meeting in the championship in week 16.
