How to Clean a Football Visor

By William Machin

Football visors, made from clear or tinted polycarbonate, provide players with eye protection and maximum vision of the field. Similar to helmets, uniforms and shoes, clean visors when they get dirty. During games, some equipment managers temporarily clear a player’s field of vision by wiping the visor with a damp cloth or sponge. At other times, the player has to maintain his own visor. Clean your visor before practice or games and have a clear view of the action.

Undo the chin strap from the helmet and set the strap aside. Mix a batch of dish soap and warm water in a clean plastic bucket.

Grip the helmet under the back rim with one hand and hold it over the bucket. Soak a clean washcloth in the soapy water and wring the wet cloth over the surface of the visor to loosen dirt. Allow the water to run into the bucket. Immerse the washcloth in the soapy water, wring it out and wash the inside of the visor.

Soak another clean washcloth in warm water. Wring the cloth over the surface of the visor to rinse the soapy water into the bucket. Immerse the washcloth in warm water, wring it out and rinse the inside of the visor.

Fold a soft cotton cloth in half. Lay the cloth on the face of the visor and dry the main portion of the visor. Use your fingers to work the cloth along the top and sides of the visor. Turn the cloth over and dry the inside of the visor in the same way. Reattach the chin strap.
