How to Use Fennel as a Treatment for Flatulence

By Leigh Wittman

Flatulence is the presence of gas in the stomach or intestinal tract. When found in the stomach, the gas exits via the mouth by belching. When found in the intestinal tract, the gas is expelled via the rectum by passing gas. Though flatulence is not a life-threatening health condition, the pressure of the gas can be uncomfortable and belching or passing gas can cause embarrassment. Fennel can be used as a treatment for flatulence. It absorbs excess gas, reducing the sensation of pressure preventing belching or passing gas. Though generally safe to use, it is important to consult your physician prior to using fennel to treat flatulence.

Crush 1 tsp. of whole fennel seeds with a mortar and pestle.

Boil 1 cup of water in a pot. Pour the crushed fennel seeds into the pot.

Reduce the heat of the water immediately to a simmer and allow the crushed fennel seeds to seep for 10 minutes to form a tea.

Strain the fennel tea to remove the crushed fennel. Do this by holding a strainer over a mug and slowly pouring the tea through the strainer and into the mug.

Sip the tea after your meals to prevent flatulence or as soon as symptoms present if you are already experiencing flatulence.

Warnings

Do not take fennel while taking fluoroquinolone antibiotics, such as ciprofloxacin. Fennel decreases the absorption of fluoroquinolone antibiotics.
