1992 Schwinn Crosscut Components

The 1992 Schwinn Crosscut is a classic among bike enthusiasts and re-builders. The basic frame style and variety of sizes of the bike made it an ideal base for modification. Originally designed as a cross-over bike, the touring community has taken advantage of the many features of this high-end bicycle. These bikes can still be found for sale in various states of modification or repair. Since the bike was so popular for rebuilding, it is oftentimes difficult to determine which parts are original and which have been modified.

General Construction

The 1992 Schwinn Crosscut was available in four frame sizes: 16, 18, 20 and 22 inches. Welded attachments consisted of two sets of split cable guides on the top rail. The Kalloy manufactured seat post, which was made of lightweight aluminum, weighed less than 14 ounces. The saddle was a Schwinn Cross, emerald skin with gel, in black. It was available in only one color, Blue Flash, with a clear coat overspray.

Front Fork Assembly

The stem was "Schwinn chrome-moly" which was durable. The handlebars were corrosion-resistant and lightweight aluminum alloy. The bars themselves weighed 6 ounces. Like the frame, the front fork was made from 4130 chrome-moly steel, also used in military weapons such as the M16 and M4 carbine. This type of steel has a much more stable strength-to-weight ratio. These lightweight components were designed to be easy to take on and off, making the Schwinn Crosscut easy to customize for serious racers and recreational bikers alike.

Gear Train

The power train and gear train were 100 percent Japanese-manufactured Shimano. The crankset was a Shimano 400LX model containing a three-gear main sprocket. It came with a Grip-Shift shifter and steel MTB pedals, which had toe-clips and straps. When it came to stopping, a pair of Shimano 500CX alloy brakes provided a reliable stopping grip.

Wheel Assembly

For the wheels, Schwinn again turned to Shimano for the hubs. Spokes were standard 14-gauge stainless steel. The rims were supplied by Araya and were colored with a gray anodized finish. Tires were National 38 Special, and preformed best at 90 psi.
