DIY Hand Cream

By Lynette Hingle

Although you can purchase hand creams at retail and department stores, you can make your own hand cream at home for yourself or for gifts for friends, family and co-workers. The trick to making DIY hand cream is to use the best quality ingredients you can afford, stir the cream until it is well blended and store it in dark-colored glass jars in the refrigerator, pantry or covered cupboard.

Working Hands Cream

Melt 1 cup olive oil, 1/2 cup coconut oil and 2 tablespoons grated beeswax on the top of a double boiler until smooth.

Heat 1 1/2 cup water in a large pot on your stove top until the water just begins to boil.

Slowly pour half of the oil mixture into the water, stirring with a spoon or hand mixer until smooth.

Add the remaining oil mixture to the oil/water mixture and 10 to 15 drops of your favorite essential oil. Stir until smooth. If the mixture is not as smooth as desired, allow the mixture to cool and put the mixture into a blender to smooth it out.

Transfer finished hand cream into a glass jar with a fitted lid.

Label hand cream jar and store in the refrigerator.

Rosewater Hand Cream

Put 2/3 cup rosewater and 1/3 cup glycerin in a bowl.

Blend mixture.

Pour the mixture into a labeled glass jar with a fitted lid. Store the jar in a cool, dry place such as a pantry.

Lavender Hand Cream

Melt 1 cup of grapeseed oil in the top of a double boiler until smooth.

Add seven to 10 drops of lavender essential oil and 1/2 teaspoon vitamin E.

Stir until the mixture is well blended. Then, allow it to cool to room temperature.

Pour the cream into a jar, cover tightly and store in the refrigerator, cupboard or pantry.

Almond Honey Hand Cream

Melt 4 tablespoons of grated beeswax and almond oil, 1 teaspoon liquid lanolin and 1 1/2 teaspoon honey on the top of a double boiler until smooth.

Add seven to 10 drops of your favorite essential oil to the mixture if desired.

Transfer the mixture to a jar, cover tightly and store in the refrigerator.
